Bound by Intent

Commemorating Fulgur and Xoanon, 1992-2012

We regret to announce that Robert Ansell will not be able to make it to the 2012 Esoteric Book Conference. Below is a statement from Robert and Rosalind Ansell regarding FULGUR’s inability to attend the Bound by Intent exhibition. XOANON will be showcasing as planned, under the title “Vox Baetyla XX”.

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, both Rosalind and myself have been strong supporters for William and Catamara’s wonderful event in Seattle since the beginning. Indeed, our annual September trip to Washington State has become something of a social and esoteric pilgrimage. It is with sincere regret then that we find ourselves now unable to attend this year’s conference. Why so, you may ask?

Since April UK Borders and Customs have been holding both our passports as part of the requirements to extend Rosalind’s UK visa – for those who may not know, she is a US citizen now resident in the UK. Unfortunately, we have recently discovered that a surge in applications caused by the Olympics has severely clogged the UK system, resulting in delays of up to nine months. Despite several requests for the safe return of our passports over the summer, UK Borders and Customs have failed to provide any assurances in the short term. We are therefore currently unable to undertake any international travel and – with much sadness – FULGUR’s participation in the exhibition Bound by Intent has been cancelled. However, full color catalogues for our display in the show – titled Under the Eye – will be available free at the event.

In lieu of my involvements as a speaker, Daniel Schulke has kindly stepped forward to present a solo lecture titled Spirit of the Book that will explore some of the themes intended for our joint presentation, Genius Libris. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Daniel for his support in very difficult circumstances, both as a friend and as a colleague. XOANON’s participation in the Bound by Intent exhibition will go ahead as planned – and if early glimpses are any measure, it looks to be a feast for the eyes and soul.

We fully appreciate that for some of you attending the EBC this year this is disappointing news, but as always this conference offers a broad range of speakers and events that would make any weekend in Seattle utterly memorable. Indeed, it remains an essential date in the calendar for anyone interested in the art of the magical book.

FULGUR LIMITED

Twenty years ago, two of the most influential studios of the modern revival in esoteric publishing were founded: Xoanon and Fulgur. Their approaches returned vivified magical presence to the medium of the book through fascinative design and content. The Esoteric Book Conference is proud to host Bound By Intent, an interactive event commemorating the work of these two presses.

This historic exhibition charts the magical development of these publishers through the books that have entranced a generation. The narrative is further illustrated by rare variant issues, telesmata, contemporary photographs, correspondence, proof copies and ephemera concerning some of the most notable authors in modern occultism, including Austin Spare, Kenneth Grant, Michael Bertiaux and Andrew Chumbley.

Special signed souvenir copies of exclusive premiums from both publishers will also be available at this special EBC event, together with unique items available only at the event. Entry is free.
